2022 Fund-A-Need - The Unicorn Program
In late 2021, Helping Strays of Monroe County initiated the Unicorn Program. This program aims to place at-risk dogs in appropriate foster homes as quickly as possible to prevent or address shelter stress. Shelter stress is a real phenomenon that impacts a dog's behavior and makes them more difficult to adopt. Not only does Helping Strays provide food, medications, and health care, but they also provide follow-up training for the fosters and adopters by contracting with highly specialized trainers that assess and address both the physical and social needs of our at-risk dogs and create a program specific to that dog. This training is a large cost to the Shelter, but Helping Strays believes that every animal deserves a chance to live his or her best life in a loving home.
